Bear Schedule 2007/8

Our goal is to teach the boys some skills and complete all Bear achievements by late January. The boys can earn the Religious medal by the end of the year. Some of the scheduled achievements will be conducted during den meetings or campouts. Activities to be done at home involve you, your family, and friends and can be started as soon as possible . The faster you complete them the more time you have to work on the electives.

Advance to Webelos

Thanks for having your son be a part of Scouts. My goal this year is for the kids to have fun and to learn some things along the way.

As stated in the Bear book, most of the achievements are done by you and your Cub Scout at home. However, I have gone through the book and selected some achievements we can complete at either a Den meeting or at campouts. We should be able to complete the following achievements: 3. What Makes America Special, 6. Take Care of Your Planet, 9. What's Cooking, 12. Family Outdoor Adventure, 14. Ride Right, 15. Games, 19. Shavings and Chips, 21. Build a Model and 22. Tying It All Up. Try to include the activities in everyday life (but make sure your son knows he is doing the achievements). It does not matter how well your son completes the achievement; the important part is that your son does his best .

On the back side is my best guess at a schedule for the year. With homework, soccer, etc, it was difficult to come up with a day and time to have the meetings. So, my plan is to hold the Den meetings on Sunday(s) at 4:45 p.m. at the Scout House on McDowell Avenue. This way, you can go to Mass afterwards if you like. Hopefully this will not interfere with anyone's schedule too much. We can change later in the year if needed.

There are a multitude of other activities we could do. I am more than willing to do any of the following if there is a desire: canoeing on the canal, biking on the canal, camping (other than what the pack is planning), soap box derby (like we did last year), visit Fort Gordon Signal Corp Museum, campout on the USS Yorktown ( http://www.patriotspoint.org/group/camping/ ) , Pal-n-Me campouts, movie night, bowling, camping at the Columbia Riverbanks Zoo ( http://www.riverbanks.org/education/scouts.shtml ), camping and hiking in the Smokey Mountains, to name a few.

Let me know if you have any questions.
